The Byzantium hard fork, part of the Ethereum’s Metropolis development phase, took place on October 16, 2017 at block 4’370’000 and improves gas expenditures and network speed, resolves issues with executable distributed code contracts, and reduces the block rewards to three Ether in a bid to ween the ecosystem away from proof-of-work.
