The code name of Ethereum’s new consensus algorithm, part of the Ethereum’s Metropolis development phase, which seeks to replace the proof-of-work concept of miners being rewarded after solving complex mathematical riddles, with a system that seeks distributed consensus without the use of excess electricity, processing power, and puzzle solving. It has been announced by the Ethereum Foundation that by the end of 2017 Casper will go live.
