Solana is a public blockchain project led by the Solana Foundation. The native cryptocurrency is called SOL. It is (mostly) open-source, with consensus achieved through Proof of Stake and Proof of History. Named after a small coastal town in Southern California, Solana was started by software developer Anatoly Yakovenko.
Yakovenko first proposed the blockchain in 2017, and the Solana blockchain was then launched in March 2020. SOL quickly became a popular cryptocurrency.
