Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT)

A distributed ledger is a database that is consensually shared and synchronised across network spread across multiple sites, institutions, or geographies. It allows transactions to have public witnesses, thereby making a cyberattack more difficult. In general, a blockchain is only one of the many types of data structures that provide secure and valid achievement of distributed consensus (see, for example, R3 Corda for a non-blockchain-based distributed ledger technology).
